A global law firm has announced a comprehensive partnership with Anthropic, making Claude the firm's primary AI platform across all 33 of its global offices. Up to 5,700 staff and lawyers will use Claude daily on client matters. The collaboration goes well beyond simply licensing software: Freshfields and Anthropic plan to jointly build legal-focused AI applications and design agentic workflows to speed up and streamline the delivery of legal advice to clients.

My personal take

This is a significant signal for the legal industry for a few reasons:

It's not just a software deal — it's co-development. Most BigLaw AI announcements amount to "we licensed tool X." Here, a big law firm is actively building agentic workflows together with Anthropic's product teams. That's a deeper integration and suggests genuine ambition to reshape how legal work gets done, not just accelerate the status quo.

The multi-vendor strategy is pragmatic but complex. Running Google/Gemini and Anthropic/Claude in parallel makes sense technologically — no single provider dominates every use case — but managing two major AI ecosystems, training thousands of lawyers on both, and maintaining coherent governance is a real organizational challenge. The risk is decision fatigue and inconsistent adoption.

"Agentic" is the word to watch. The repeated emphasis on agentic workflows (AI completing multi-step tasks autonomously) is telling. This goes beyond AI-assisted drafting into territory where AI could handle full sub-processes — e.g., running a due diligence workflow end-to-end. If it works, it has real implications for how legal work is staffed and priced.

Expectations are now set. As the article rightly notes, announcing this publicly means clients will start asking when and how it changes their experience. Overall, a bold move. Whether it leads to genuine transformation or remains a well-branded experiment will depend on execution.
